Program
 
A teaching internship is available to a junior or senior level undergraduate student during the legislative session with the Washington State Legislature. This position provides a unique opportunity for a student to acquire middle school and high school level classroom teaching and management experience in a professional environment. In addition, the teaching intern will have the opportunity to assist legislative offices and participate in academic seminars and workshops.
 
The intern works with the school Teacher and Assistant Teacher, supervising students, teaching in the School classes, attending committee hearings, assessing student achievement, and completing other tasks as they occur. The internship is open to students with an interest in teaching. Any major is welcome to apply.
 
Eligibility
 
Junior and senior level students of any major from universities and colleges in New Delhi & National Capital Region are eligible for a legislative session teaching internship. The teaching internship must be taken for academic credit through the intern's school. Applicants will be subject to their individual university or department qualifications or requirements.
 
Intern Duties
 
The teaching intern works with the page school teacher, who serves as the intern's supervisor. The principal duties include:
  • Teaching School class
  • Database management
  • Assisting with creating the weekly newsletter (photography and layout)
  • Attending committee hearings and floor sessions with pages
  • Assisting students in creating original bills for mock committee hearings
 
The teaching intern will fully participate in weekly academic seminars and workshops.
Qualifications an applicant needs to bring to the job include
 
  • Desire to work with young people in a school setting
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Professional manner
  • Maturity
  • Interest in the legislative process
  • Self motivation/direction
 
It is PREFERRED that an applicant has Volunteer or paid experience working with young people.
