The word volunteering is used for a range of activities such as community service, self-help, charity, neighborliness, citizenship, public service, community action, community involvement, trustee, member, and helper.
To some people it is an act of kindness; to others it is a means of achieving a personal goal or putting something back into society. It is also a way of gaining new skills and improving job prospects.
Volunteers come from all walks of life and are active in almost every aspect of society that you can think of - from visiting elderly people, to sitting on a magistrates' bench, to governing local schools, to performing in a local play or coaching young athletes

Volunteering opens up a world of possibilities - and volunteers can and do almost everything!
This includes informal volunteering such as friendly support within neighborhoods, interest groups, faith and cultural groups, families and communities. It also includes acts of good citizenship such as spontaneous community and individual response to emergency situations, community service, work experience, mutual obligation programs, corporate citizenship and membership of associations, community groups and social action groups. Self-worth, great fun, friendships and job opportunities can all be part of getting involved with your community.
Volunteering may be an outlet for your natural talents, a road test for your new career, or simply a handy way to meet new friends. Your strong beliefs and values may also inspire you to volunteer.

Here's just a few of the goals that volunteering can help you achieve:
- A means of building self-esteem or confidence.
- A great way to learn or develop skills.
- A pathway to enhancing work experience.
- To gain improved health and be active.
- A way to meet new people or broaden your social set.
- To make a difference in someone's life.
- A way of expressing gratitude for help you may have received in the past or 'giving back'.
- An opportunity to support a cause you feel strongly about.
- Feeling needed and valued is satisfying in itself.
- To make a difference within one's own community.
Volunteers usually give their time to charity or a good cause. They try to change things for the better in their school, their area, and country or in the world.
